What is a scale model?
A scale model is a smaller recreation or representation of a real-life object or thing, this could be anything from a plane, boat, car or train to buildings, figures or trees. There is no limit to what a scale model can portray.
How small a model is in relation to its real-life counterpart (the prototype) is measured by its scale. Scale is usually represented numerically, for example, 1:150 scale. In this case, the scale simply means the prototype would be 150 times larger than the model.
It is important to remember that different models sharing the same scale may not necessarily be the same size, for example, a 1:100 scale model of an aeroplane will be much larger than a 1:100 scale model of a car just as an aeroplane would be larger than a car in real life. If you are not sure how big your model will be in a given scale, it is recommended that you ask your supplier to avoid disappointment.
