What are Vacuform model kits ?
Vacuform model kits (sometimes called vacform kits or simply vac kits) are a type of scale model kit that is made using a process called vacuum forming. In this process, a heated sheet of plastic is placed over a mould and then vacuum pressure is used to draw the plastic tightly around the mould, creating the desired shape. Once the plastic has cooled and hardened, it can be removed from the mould and used to assemble a model.
Vacuform model kits are popular among scale model enthusiasts because they offer a unique level of detail and realism. The vacuum forming process allows for intricate surface textures and fine details to be reproduced accurately. These kits are often used for creating models of aircraft, cars, ships and other vehicles.
One advantage of vacuform model kits is that they are usually less expensive than injection-molded plastic kits. However, they do require more skill and experience to assemble and finish. The plastic used in vacuform kits is usually thinner and more flexible than injection-molded plastic, so it requires careful handling and cutting.
The relative cheapness of the vacuforming process as opposed to injection moulding enables many small companies to operate in the market. Often, these manufacturers tend to have small production runs and choose to produce rare and limited interest kits that larger manufacturers would find uneconomical to mass produce.
To assemble a vacuform model kit, the parts need to be carefully cut from the plastic sheet and then trimmed and sanded to fit together properly. Some modelers may choose to reinforce the parts with additional materials, such as styrene or resin, for added strength. The model can then be painted and detailed to bring it to life.
It's worth noting that vacuform model kits are far less common than other types of model kits, such as injection-molded plastic kits or resin kits. However, they offer a unique challenge and can result in stunning finished models.
