A lot of the realism surrounding trackwork and turnouts comes from the effective weathering of sleepers, ballast and the rails. Granted, an express turnout with electrofrogs will always look more realistic than the type of points included in a starter set, but painting your sleepers with sleeper grime, painting the rail's walls with a rust effect rail pen and weathering your ballast will by far produce the best results.
