What is masking fluid used for?
Masking fluid works the same way as masking tape, only it comes in liquid form and is brushed on.
Once painted on and allowed to set, masking fluid will keep an area paint-free while painting the rest of a model. Masking fluid can be advantageous over traditional tape because intricate patterns can be produced. It can penetrate fine cracks, gaps and spaces that masking tape cannot and it is easier to remove and leaves behind less residue.
Masking fluid works by setting into a rubber-like solid material once painted on. In that state, it forms a watertight barrier prohibiting any paint from either penetrating or seeping underneath the masked area. Once the paint has dried, the solidified masking fluid can be easily removed by peeling or lightly rubbing with a cloth.
Masking fluid is particularly useful for preserving any recessed details on a model when painting, especially finer ones, as it can fill such spaces to their entirety which would take several layers of masking tape.
