What is a 1Co Co1 wheel arrangement?
A 1Co-Co1 wheel arrangement is essentially a Co-Co wheel arrangement with an unpowered, articulated pony truck attached to it. This extended bogie design is used to better distribute weight on larger locomotives.
A standard Co-Co wheel arrangement is a way of describing a type of locomotive bogie that has six wheels attached (three on each side) and where each wheel is powered by its own traction motor. A locomotive with a Co-Co wheel arrangement will have two such bogies (one at either end) giving the locomotive 12 wheels in total.
A 1Co-Co1 wheel arrangement is the same as a Co-Co arrangement, but with the addition of two extra wheels attached. These two extra wheels are unpowered so don't have traction motors and sit in an independent bogie (known as a pony truck). The pony truck is permanently attached to the main bogie but is articulated to assist with bends. This means that a 1Co-Co1 bogie has eight wheels in total (four on either side) and likewise the host locomotive will have a bogie at each end giving it 16 wheels in total.
In Britain, 1Co-Co1 wheels arrangements were used on some early designs of diesel-electric locomotives such as the Peak classes (44, 45 and 46) and the Class 40 making these heavy locomotives more suitable for the routes they were intended for.
