What is a flywheel in a motor in a model railway engine?
A flywheel is a heavy metal disc-shaped weight that is used to aid the momentum of a motor.
Flywheels are added to some model railway locomotives for exactly that reason and are typically located on the driveshaft just after it leaves the motor.
The motor in your locomotive will have to work a little harder to get the train plus the weight of the flywheel moving, but that is not necessarily a bad thing as it can help smooth out any juddering as the train starts to move. Where flywheels really come into their own is when your locomotive suffers a short power outage due to insulated frogs or a dirty track. In these circumstances, the momentum built up in the heavy spinning flywheel is enough to keep your train moving those crucial few centimetres to an electrified section of track. Flywheels also make locomotives heavier which is good for traction.
Flywheels are generally a good thing for model railway locomotives helping them to run smoother, with better traction and able to overcome small gaps in power.
