What is the advantage of a fan fiddle yard in model railway?
A fan fiddle-yard is a permanent fiddle yard where each track is accessed via a series of turnouts 'fanning' out from the layout's main operating line. But with so many turnouts connected in series, the space required for a yard of this type is immense. So what is their advantage over other types?
As it happens, the advantages are few. Other types of fiddle yard, such as a sector plate or one that uses a traverser, can offer the same storage capacity using less space. One advantage, however, is that fan fiddle yards can be operated remotely using powered turnouts so they can be situated at the back of a layout or any other hard to reach location, provided you don't need to change locomotives.
Another advantage of a fan fiddle yard is its relative ease of construction compared to other types. The trackwork of a fan fiddle yard is no more complex than anywhere else on the layout whereas, traversers and sector plate types will require some baseboard modification or bespoke construction.
