What is a mitre box?
A mitre box is a metal framework designed to hold an item of building material in place while you saw through it at an exact angle thanks to the box's integral saw-guiding slots.
These tools are of particular interest to scratch-builders who require great accuracy to their cuts when constructing a model. Although there are many mitre boxes available on the market, ones designed specifically for modellers tend to be of aluminium construction and have slots placed at 45° and 90° angles that accommodate very fine razor saws.
Thanks to their open-ended design, mitre boxes are suitable for holding longer model parts and building materials such as strips or tubes in place while you make a cut, however, the load bay on these boxes have a typical width of around 40mm and a depth of 20mm meaning they are not suitable for cutting wider items such as sheet materials unless cut down first.
Although limited in width, mitre saw boxes are a must-have for modellers needing to create accurate angled cuts to their models and building materials.
