What is the best method for colouring bricks individually on a model wall?
The most realistic model brick walls are those with some of the individual bricks picked out in slightly different shades, but how is this achieved?
There is no real shortcut to this effect, most modellers simply colour the bricks individually. There are many embossed card or plastic wall sheets that feature irregularly shaped bricks or patterns, and that's a great start, but when it comes to colouring, it's time for you to get busy.
The best way to accentuate bricks is by using a dry method of applying the colour to avoid runoff onto the mortar lines or surrounding brickwork. You could use a crayon to lightly shade, or if you prefer, you could try dry brushing.
On balance, crayons will give you more control thanks to their fine tips, especially when working with smaller scales, having said that, it is not necessary to paint right up to the edges of each brick to achieve realistic effects, so the choice is yours.
Try not to overdo it when adding shading to your brickwork. Although real bricks can (and often do) differ due to repairs, different manufacturers, modifications or the use of reclaimed bricks, the difference is subtle, and this should be remembered when trying to replicate the effect.
