What are 'desktop' model aircraft?
Desktop model aircraft are ornamental models usually constructed to 1:72 scale, made from diecast and often take pride of place on a travel agent's desk. They come as ready-made models and are usually pigeonholed as gimmicks or office accessories, but don't let that fool you!
Desktop model planes get overlooked in part because they come ready-made which for most modellers defeats the object of modelling, but, desktop model planes can actually be very credible models offering high levels of detail and good build quality.
There's a wide variety of desktop models available from commercial airliners to military fighter planes that has a small but loyal following collecting sought after Spitfires and repainting or rebranding the more mundane.
Desktop models may not provide the enjoyment of constructing the model, but, they do look incredible on a desktop!
