What is dry brushing?
We are often advised to dry-brush models to achieve particular effects, but what is dry brushing, and when would you use this technique?
Dry brushing is the process of putting just enough paint on your brush to leave a trace of it on your model, but without covering it in solid colour. To dry-brush, you should dip your brush into some paint, then remove the majority of it with a paper towel or the like. This means that the paint you're applying will be nearly dry to begin with, hence the name.
Dry brushing will provide a non-uniform, transparent cover of paint that still reveals the colour underneath. It will also tend to highlight raised parts. This method is often used to depict stains, spills or for weathering anything from rolling stock to embossed walling.
