What is an open-top baseboard?
A conventional baseboard for a model railway consists of some legs supporting a wooden framework finished off with a nice flat top surface on which we can build our layout.
An open-top baseboard is similar in the respect that it has legs supporting a framework but no flat top surface. Instead, an additional framework is added to create the rough shape of the landscape to be eventually modelled.
The track-bed is generally constructed on raised plinths (known as risers) with a ribbon of baseboard fixed on top. The advantage of using this method to construct your landscape is that scenery can dip below track-level as well as rising above it making valleys and railway embankments a lot easier to model.
This type of baseboard is a lot more involved during its construction but is arguably the best way to model a hilly landscape.
