What is a contact adhesive?
Contact adhesive (also known as contact cement) is an all-purpose adhesive that's popular amongst modellers thanks to its clear finish and versatile usage. It also has the advantage of a short but not instant bonding time that allows modellers to position parts conscientiously.
Contact adhesive is not a cyanoacrylate (super glue) and works in a different way. Cyanoacrylate bonds as a result of a chemical reaction to moisture, heat or UV light. Contact adhesive, on the other hand, bonds when its solvent evaporates, leaving behind a highly effective adhesive material.
Contact adhesive is often chosen because it works with all mediums whereas most other adhesives and cements have their limitations. Because of this, many modellers turn to contact adhesive when working with photoetched parts or resin, especially when bonding them to materials of a different type.
