Which scale aircrafts are closest to OO gauge?
The closest model aircraft scale to OO Gauge is 1:72 scale. That said, it is still useful to first compare the two scales in question.
OO gauge is most often categorised as being analogous to 1:76 scale when comparisons are sought with military or aviation models. This being the case it is close to 1:72 but not identical. There would be a slight but noticeable difference when conducting a side-by-side comparison of the same subject in the two scales. Perhaps a better perspective is to establish a measurement comparison between the two scales. OO gauge establishes a base scale of 4mm = 1 foot, whereas 1:72 works out as 4.25mm = 1 foot.
The larger an item is the more the disparity would be obvious between a side-by-side comparison in the two scales. In most respects, when modellers are creating a diorama, they will be including dissimilar items such as trains and aircraft. As such, the disparity will be much more difficult to spot and most observers would probably remain oblivious to any differences.
To all intents and purposes, the two scales can be included in the same diorama with no problems, especially where the items included are of dissimilar types as mentioned above. The final decision will inevitably lie with the individual modeller in how stringent they wish to be in their personal requirements.
