What is the minimum radius I can use on my model railway layout?

The general advice is that you don't run engines on anything less than a second radius curve (438mm or 17.25 inches) in 00 gauge (double the measurement for 0 gauge and halve it for N gauge).

This radius should be increased greater if you plan to operate scratch-built or finescale rolling stock.

The second radius rule is true enough if you do not want issues with trains derailing and an extremely unrealistic appearance, it does, however, beg the question of what use do first radius curves have.

Traditionally first radius curves were often supplied with starter sets containing very small tank engines and a few trucks. The tracks were intended for use more as a toy than for a credible layout, but even most starter sets nowadays come with second radius and sometimes even third radius curves.

First radius curves are not without their use though. There are some very interesting YouTube clips addressing the issue of space for a layout (or lack of) and the necessity to occasionally use such a curve. The results are quite surprising with some rather large locos successfully negotiation the bends with no apparent trouble.

There will be some compromise though. Should you decide to incorporate the odd first radius curve into your layout, you should be prepared that the overhang from larger rolling stock will be significant so you will not be able to place any line-side scenery such as fences, stations or signals too close to the track. Running speed will have to be reduced as the centrifugal force of any heavy locomotives running at speed around such a sharp bend will be sure to end in disaster. The length of trains will have to be carefully considered too as you really want to avoid a situation where the back of your train is travelling east whilst the front is travelling west around a continuous sharp bend. This contradiction in force will be searching for anything other than perfect track work as an excuse to derail your train.

Another couple of top tips are to definitively not locate point work anywhere near the bend or run a left-hand bend straight into a right-hand bend (or vice versa) with no straight in between and if at all possible use a transitioning curve at the beginning of the bend to gently ease the train into it.

If all of this advice is followed, and the compromise is acceptable then the correct answer to the question "what is the minimum radius I can use?" is technically first radius.

Would we advise it? Well, there are many solutions for layouts in small spaces, smaller gauges or end to end layouts for example, or why not try a cameo scene layout such as an engine shed scenario. If however, you have your heart set on bends and space is a real problem then we would say that having a layout with some first radius curves is much more fun than not having one at all so go for it!
