In railways, what are two, three and four-aspect signals?
We often hear about colour light signals having two, three or four aspects in their description, but what does this mean?
In this case, there is no complicated explanation as it simply refers to the number of lights (or combinations of) that a signal is capable of showing.
A two-aspect signal in model form, for example, will be able to show two lights. This could be a red and green, a red and yellow or a yellow and green. A three-aspect signal will show a red, green or yellow light and a four-aspect signal will be able to show a red light, a green light, a yellow light or a double yellow light just like the prototype (the double yellow is counted as just one aspect in the description because it reuses the first single yellow light).
Generally, if a model signal has a route indicator or shunt signal attached, it is not counted as a separate aspect, and the product will list these separately.
