How to use coloured primer in a spray can?

In general, using a spray can of coloured primer is simple, but a few tips can make all the difference. When using any spray can, you should work in a well ventilated area and preferably wear a mask to avoid inhaling harmful particles.

The first tip is to make sure that you are using the correct colour. You may think that a model intended for a yellow topcoat, for example, will require a yellow primer, but in actual fact the best colour primer for a yellow topcoat is pink! and no it's not April the 1st! A little research in this area can really optimise the final results, so take a few minutes to look it up.

The next tip is to look out for the little rectangular slot in the can's lid. This is designed for a flat screwdriver to be inserted and gently twisted to release the cap, the alternative use of brute force may result in the cap breaking, which is not a huge problem, but annoying nonetheless.

Probably the most important tip for using a coloured primer is to shake the can well for between one and two minutes before use. There are many fine and heavy pigments in a can of coloured primer and they need mixing well, this is a must if your primer is to look good and adhere properly.

After use, clean your nozzle well. Not doing this will allow the primer to set in the nozzle and you will at the very least have the unenviable task of clearing it before the next use. A top tip is to turn the can upside down and give a short blast on the nozzle to clear any primer still in the system.

The next tip is to spray holding the can approximately 20 cm (8 inches) away from the model. That is the ideal distance to allow the spray to mist effectively before making contact with the model. Holding the can too close or too far away could result in waisted primer or a runny finish.

The final tip is to test first. You have likely spent a long time choosing and building your model, and in some cases a long time saving up for it too! So always test your primer on a spare bit of sprue or a test model first. It won't take long to do and could save you from a costly mistake.
