If you do not have an airbrush, it is always best to apply paints or washes in as thinner coats as possible. Don't worry if your coats do not adequately cover the colour beneath, you can always apply another coat once the first one has dried. If you try to apply paint that is too thickly, you will likely end up with brush lines, and they will ruin any chance of making a model look good.
