What is an EM1 locomotive?
The EM1s (Class 76 under the TOPS system) were a British design of Bo-Bo electric locomotive with a maximum speed of 65mph and built to a design by Sir Nigel Gresley. EM1 stands for Electric Mixed-traffic 1 and the prototype was designed as early as 1941. However, WW2 delayed work on both the locomotive's production and the electrification of the Woodhead route from Manchester to Sheffield where the locomotives were intended to operate. This resulted in the production locomotives being completed between 1950 and 1953.
EM1s differed from a lot of British electric locomotive designs because they ran off overhead catenary but drew a 1500v DC power supply rather than the AC that we are used to seeing today. Including the prototype, 58 were produced and put to work on the Woodhead line hauling mainly freight. However, when their faster, passenger-hauling, sister-class the EM2s were all sold to the Netherlands Railway in 1968, the EM1s saw regular use on passenger traffic.
The part-closure of the Woodhead line in 1981 left the EM1s with no promise of employment elsewhere due to their unique design and subsequently the whole class was withdrawn. Only 76020 survived into preservation and was chosen because it was the first locomotive to operate through the Woodhead tunnel when the line first opened.
