What is the difference between square and round signal posts?
Originally in the UK, signal posts were constructed from wood and square in shape.
The later round signal posts were generally made from steel tubing and started to appear on the railways in the mid-1930s to support new colour-light signals and semaphore signals constructed around this time.
Interestingly, some very early semaphore signals on round steel posts retained the use of wooden signal arms, in contrast, some early light-signals were attached to wooden posts, but most were soon replaced.
Other types of signal-post include concrete and lattice.
