Are NEM couplings better than traditional couplings?
Have you ever wondered what NEM couplings are? We see the name mentioned all the time because they are supplied on many new models these days, but what are they? And why are they better than the older style couplings?
The NEM (Normen Europäischer Modellbahnen) couplings that come on many new models are smaller versions of the D shaped tension lock couplings that have adorned Hornby models for many years.
Because they are smaller, they look better and are not as imposing as their predecessors. They are also better because you can unclip the coupling (leaving its socket firmly attached to the rollingstock) and in its place clip in a NEM coupling of a different type.
There is wide range of NEM coupling types available, including, an old-style large D shaped tension lock coupling, a medium-sized D shaped tension lock coupling and a fixed-bar coupling (used to semi-permanently couple units or coaches). You can even get the popular knuckle type couplings from the Kadee range that clip into NEM sockets.
Changing couplings to match other rolling stock can increase reliability and give better running, however, care should be taken that your new coupling sits at the same height as the coupling on the rolling stock that you are planning to couple to. This small check will save you the inconvenience of derailments and coaches uncoupling themselves as they travel along.
You can also get couplings that are different lengths. This is great if you want to couple rolling stock closer together to create a more realistic gap between carriages or trucks. Again, care should be taken to ensure that lengths between your rolling stocks couplings are even and that the hooks that connect over the D shaped frame of the opposite carriage are both touching the bar evenly when the slack between the carriage is taken up.
So that is why NEM couplings are brilliant: they are a standardised coupling that facilitates interchangeability with other coupling types. This gives you choice and flexibility. But don’t forget your checks or you could be heading for disaster on the rails!
