What are wasp stripes on a locomotive?
Wasp stripes are the yellow and black stripes featured on the cab fronts of shunting and most industrial locomotives in the UK.
The vivid paint scheme was first introduced in the very late '50s and more commonly in the '60s. They were applied to both steam and diesel shunting and industrial locomotives, but the livery took nearly a decade to reach some BR shunters.
Wasp stripes can still be seen today on the few remaining shunters out there on the network. But as the role of shunters has reduced significantly over the last 30 years, you're unlikely to find the once familiar sight at your local station.
