What is the difference between a 3 pole motor and a 5 pole motor?
Regardless of whether your locomotive uses analogue or DCC to operate, the principles of its motor will be the same, and both can come with either a 3-pole or a 5-pole motor. But what's the difference?
Ignoring any posh or sophisticated circuitry, at the heart of your model there is an electric motor. The motor works using a series of coiled-wire electromagnets attached to a cylinder or wheel-like contraption in the centre of the motor. In addition to this, the encompassing motor shell has regular magnets placed around its inner wall. When power is applied to the electromagnets, they are drawn towards the regular magnets and movement is achieved. This is the basic principle of a model railway locomotive's electric motor.
The physical difference between a 3-pole and 5-pole motor is the number of coiled electromagnets on the centre wheel. A 3-pole motor has three electromagnets and a 5-pole motor has five.
The difference in performance between a 3 and 5-pole motor is generally smoothness with most modellers agreeing that 5-pole motors outperform the lesser variant.
