Should I use my old model railway layout or buy a new one?

So the kids have all grown up and moved away, you finally have a little space, a bit of extra cash maybe, and a couple of hours a week to fill, and you decide to rekindle your love of model railways that's been sidetracked since you were a mere youngster. But should you unpack your old dusty layout from the loft or buy brand new shiny toys to amuse you? The good news is, there is no right or wrong answer to that question, only considerations that will help you make the correct choice for you.
Have a good think about what you want to achieve long term, if you fancy having a go at a layout that utilises the latest in technology, with DCC operation, has locomotives with sound and a track plan that epitomises a prototypical railway, it would probably be a good idea to start from scratch where possible as it's unlikely that models from the '60s, '70s or '80s will provide you with the accuracy, detail and effects that you desire.
But if, like most of us, you just want to run some trains through some decent scenery, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't recommission (or at least utilise) your old railway. However, after a period of non-activity, much of your trackwork will require a good clean and the rail joiners replacing. Your rolling stock will need a good service too, fortunately, older locomotives are relatively easy to work on compared to modern ones, but it should be noted that sourcing replacement parts can be a little hit and miss, so be prepared for a little work.
Although both options are viable, it is a good idea to start with what you intend to continue with. Older locomotives and rolling stock with wider wheels do not like modern track or turnouts, and older crude model buildings will have their shortcomings highlighted when placed next to modern equivalents, so mixing old and new is not advised. That should not deter you from using your old railway though, if you wish to add to it, the used market has an abundance of older models so continuity can be achieved without too much fuss.

Whichever direction you decided upon, don't let cost be a factor, you will have to work to a budget whether you opt for old or new so take your time and enjoy the journey.
