Is it better to spray primer on or use a brush?
The primary objective of using a primer is to allow your paint to better adhere to your model. What you don't want to do is create any unnecessary thickness to your layers of paint as this will destroy any fine details or in the worst-case scenario the profile too, so from this perspective, it is better to spray your primer on rather than painting it on with a brush.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, like when applying primer to a difficult to mask area, in this instance, you may have little choice but to use a brush but generally spraying is best. This is because using an airbrush or a spray can to apply your primer will result in only a very fine layer being applied at any one time. This gives you the control necessary to apply just enough paint to get the job done without any thickness inducing excess that you may get using a brush.
Other advantages of spraying your primer on includes a more even coat and the absence of brush marks, both of which are desired qualities when painting a model properly.
Although sometimes we don't have a choice, if it's at all possible it's best to spray primer on rather than using a brush.
