Why do some N gauge tracks have irregularly spaced sleepers?
During a trip to your local model shop, you may have noticed what looks like N gauge model railway track with unusually large spacing between the sleepers and wondered what it's used for. In fact, what you have discovered is 009 gauge track which is used to represent a narrow-gauge railway in 00 or HO gauge. With a width between the rails of 9mm it has the same gauge as N gauge track and any confusion can easily be forgiven.
009 gauge track with irregular sleeper spacing (Peco SL-400) is designed specifically to emulate the 'that'll do' approach used by many real-life narrow-gauge railways to facilitate cheaper line construction costs.
This often resulted in less than perfect sleepers being used to construct the lines as well as frugal sleeper spacing. Using sleepers in this way was not a safety issue due to lower line speeds and lightweight requirement so the method was adopted almost universally with private industrial railways being the worst offenders.
The model version of this type of track apart from having irregular spaces also depicts irregularly shaped sleepers to further demonstrate the cheapness and age of the make-do sleepers used on many narrow gauge railways.
