What scale is 20mm, used by wargamers?
There are numerous scales used by wargamers, traditionally, the scale in which they played was pretty much dictated by the type of game they were playing with certain games favouring certain scales, nowadays though, there is much more choice available and factors such as space available or level of detail desired are more common considerations when deciding what scale to play in.
20mm is a more traditional scale that equates to roughly 1:72. 20mm refers to the height of a typical figure, measured from the foot to the eye level. It is the Goldilocks of scales being not too large, not too small and is comprehensively covered by most large wargaming manufacturers especially when it comes to WWII miniatures and vehicles resulting in the scale being reasonably priced too.
Despite its middle ground appeal, in more recent times 20mm scale has lost in popularity to 25 and 28mm scale miniatures as gamers become more sophisticated and embrace painting and detailing the miniatures as much as the gameplay itself while others simply prefer the weight of the larger figures.
Nonetheless, in a recent study, nearly 20% of gamers stated that they play in 20mm scale meaning that these classic miniatures will be around for a while yet.
