How long should it take to construct a model kit?
How long it should take to construct a model kit may seem like a question that can't be answered as it of course depends on the complexity and size of the kit as well as the experience of the modeller, but that doesn't make it a silly question. If you think about it, someone who has never completed even a basic kit has no way of knowing whether a starter kit, for instance, should reasonably take a week, month or lifetime to complete.
The best advice to give anyone building a kit for the first time is to not measure its progress in time. This will increase mistakes and decrease the pleasure of building it, and pleasure is what it's all about. The correct way to construct a model is to do as much as you want when you want to do it, so for some, a kit can take a week while for others it can take months.
In theory though, in an attempt to answer an unanswerable question, a starter kit of an aeroplane, for example, could be constructed in around a week. This allows for a session to get to grips with the instructions and start glueing larger parts together, another couple of sessions to deal with the fiddly smaller details such as wheels and engines etc, another couple of sessions to paint the model (bearing in mind that the model will likely have to be left to dry between coats or colours) and a final session to fix the decals in place.
This is by no means an aim by which success should be measured, it's merely an indication that constructing a kit in an afternoon may be a little optimistic but anything between 2 days and 100 years is just fine so long as you have enjoyed it!
