What are functions on a DCC decoder?
One of the many advantages of using DCC is that compliant models are capable of operating auxiliary functions such as horns, lights, fans, smoke and realistic sounds. The amount of additional functions that you can add to a model depends on how many pins its decoder has, more pins equals more functions.
Functions are typically selected by using a combination of the function button on the controller followed by the number that has been allocated to it on your controller. The command will then be received, understood and executed by the decoder inside your model which will send power through a specific circuit to the relevant component.
Most components on your model (such as cab light or headlights) will be operated by a simple power-on/power-off command from your controller, while others such as engine sound have a more complicated job to do so will need additional chips installed to work properly.
Most modern DCC fitted models are manufactured with the ability to operate at least a couple of functions. An upgrade to a decoder with more functions is possible, as is the installation of circuits that require additional chips, however, whether your model has enough space inside to accommodate such an upgrade is something to be checked before parting with your hard-earned cash!
