What is a NEM pocket?
NEM couplings are part of a universal coupling system for model railway rolling stock. They were introduced as a solution to the many different types of coupling from various manufacturers not working well together.
They consist of two parts, the NEM coupling and the NEM pocket. The NEM pocket is the bit that attaches to your rolling stock and is intended to stay fixed to the model. It is a socket into which you can attach any type of NEM coupling.
NEM couplings are available in many different designs to mirror most couplings fitted by manufacturers in years gone by, thus if your coupling doesn't match the rest of a rake, you can simply substitute it for one that does (providing it is NEM compatible).
Some modellers simply wish to change their couplings to ones that are more aesthetically pleasing or maybe function better with their rolling stock. Whatever the reason, the NEM system of interchangeable couplings and pockets makes the job simple and effective.
A word to the wise, if you are considering purchasing some NEM couplings to harmonise the couplings on your rolling stock, make sure you choose the exact same coupling. Although some types appear the same, there are variations available differing in length and height and if mixed, could cause derailments.
