PVA glue, commonly referred to as white glue, is a type of adhesive made from a polyvinyl acetate emulsion. It's a popular choice among scale modellers for a variety of reasons:
First and foremost, PVA glue is water-based and non-toxic, making it a safe option for use in a hobby setting. It dries clear, which is particularly useful when working with clear parts or when you want to avoid unsightly glue marks on your finished model.
While wet, PVA glue has a strong initial tack, allowing you to position parts precisely before the bond sets. Once fully dried, it forms a flexible bond that can withstand a certain degree of stress and movement, which is beneficial for models that may need to be handled or transported.
PVA glue adheres well to porous materials like wood, paper, and cloth, making it ideal for tasks such as attaching decals, securing rigging, or binding books or manuals related to your scale model project. However, it does not adhere effectively to non-porous surfaces like metal or glass.
One of the advantages of PVA glue is that it can be reactivated and re-bonded by simply wetting it with water, allowing for adjustments or repairs as needed. Additionally, any excess glue or spills can be easily cleaned up with water while still wet, although it becomes more difficult to remove once fully cured.
Available at a relatively low cost compared to other adhesives, PVA glue is a versatile and budget-friendly option for scale modellers of all skill levels.
