What is the shelf life of cyanoacrylate (super glue)?
The average shelf life of cyanoacrylate glue (commonly known as super glue) can vary, but typically falls within the following ranges:
- Unopened cyanoacrylate glue: 12-24 months when stored properly.
- Opened cyanoacrylate glue: 2-6 months. Once exposed to air, the glue will begin to cure and thicken, reducing its effectiveness.
Factors that can affect the shelf life of cyanoacrylate glue include:
- Storage conditions - Cyanoacrylate glue should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Exposure to moisture will cause the glue to cure prematurely.
- Packaging - Glue in smaller, airless containers (like squeeze tubes) will generally last longer than glue in larger bottles.
- Usage frequency - Glue that is used regularly and has the cap kept on tightly between uses will last longer than glue that is opened and exposed to air more frequently.
