Tabletop gaming is a form of gaming where players gather around a table and use physical game pieces, such as miniatures, dice, and cards, to play a game. This type of gaming is also referred to as board gaming, tabletop gaming or tabletop role-playing games (RPGs).
Tabletop gaming is a broad term that encompasses a wide variety of games, including board games, miniature games, card games, and role-playing games. Board games are games that are played on a board, with players moving pieces around the board to achieve a specific objective. Miniature games involve the use of miniature figures to represent characters or units in the game, while card games use a deck of cards as the primary game component. Role-playing games involve players creating and controlling characters in a shared story or adventure.
Many Tabletop gamers are also modellers as some of the components and pieces they use are models in their own right. There are a number of scales that are specifically aimed at wargamers and a number of manufacturers produce model kits specifically for that purpose. One such popular scale is the 28 mm or 1:56 scale. This is commonly used to create both figures and vehicles for wargaming and covers a wide range of historical eras. This scale is very pragmatic as it is relatively cheap, it offers good detail on the subject matter and because of the relative size of the subjects it allows a modeller/gamer to collect a large number of pieces whilst economising on space.
Tabletop gaming has a long history, and it is a popular pastime for people of all ages and backgrounds. It can be a fun way to socialize, relax, and engage the mind whilst keeping history alive for current and future generations.
