There are a number of ways to remove paint from a model. When required to remove paint most modellers may well use the appropriate thinners. This may well be effective for small amounts of paint or for thinly applied coats. Although effective in some cases, more abrasive thinners may not only remove the paint in question but can also end up damaging the surface of the model, or impair its ability to take further coats of paint. This last point alone is the most important to bear in mind when removing paint, as any formula strong enough to remove the paint is likely to damage the model if left unchecked.
This is the compromise faced by any manufacturer releasing a paint remover. One product that has been formulated specifically for the removal of paint from models is 'Strip Magic', by Deluxe Materials. Strip Magic is effective on a wide range of paint types, including acrylic, enamel, cellulose and oils. Its chemical formula has been configured to soften paint within 5 to 15 minutes. Once the paint has been sufficiently softened it can then be removed by gently rubbing it with a cloth or cotton bud soaked in methylated spirits or ethyl alcohol. Care should be taken to ensure that any excess Strip Magic is removed as left unchecked it can damage the surface.
Due to its strong formula, Strip Magic can also be used to remove decals, as it will effectively break down the integrity of the decal's carrier film, making them easier to remove. Strip Magic can also be used to remove excess paint, grease or other contaminants from metal modelling tools.
Strip Magic is a very effective paint removal medium that can be used on plastic, resin and metal surfaces. It is always good practice to test it first on scrap material to test its effectiveness. Due to its fast-acting effects, it should never be left to work unchecked as this may lead to damage to the surface in question.
