What is the Hornby Zero One system?
Introduced in 1979, Hornby's 'Zero 1' system could be considered a precursor to today's DCC. The system, although making significant gains in popularity, was short-lived due to underinvestment and production ceased in 1986.
The system used a series of digital commands to operate trains independently without the need for isolated tracks. Locomotives used addresses to receive and act upon those commands using a special chip.
If that sounds like the way DCC works today, it's because it is. But the Zero 1 system was much less refined, after all, it was using 1970s technology. A good example of this is the way in which the chips were programmed to a dedicated address and involved physically painting on the chip with conductive paint! Needless to say the technology is not compatible with the systems we have today.
Despite the shortcomings of the early technology, the Hornby Zero 1 was incredibly robust and a number have survived in regular use.
