What is a Presflo wagon?
A Presflo wagon is a railway wagon specifically designed for the transportation of cement.
After nationalisation, the Ideal Stock Committee reviewed British Rail's inherited fleet of wagons and soon discovered that a suitable means for transporting loose cement by rail simply didn't exist. The reason for this was because cement and other powdered goods had previously been carried in sacks, so a brand new wagon was designed and became known as a Presflo wagon.
The new wagons started to appear in the 1950s and used gravity to load and compressed air to unload. The name Presflo derives from the words pressure and flow, a system whereby the cement to be carried was treated with pressurised air to prevent clumping.
The wagons are distinctive in appearance thanks to their outer ribs used for strengthening. The Presflo design gave rise to several wagon variants, including the Prestwin and many fly ash wagons. Presflo wagons could be seen in regular service until the late 1980s and a few examples have now been preserved, one of which is part of the national collection.
