Do Train-Tech sound capsules require pick-ups?
One of the main features of Train-Tech's sound capsules is that they require no pick-ups or hard-wired connections.
If you have never heard of them before, Train-Tech sound capsules are motion-activated, battery-operated capsules with incorporated speakers that create generic sound effects for engines or rolling stock.
The capsules are self-supporting in that they run from a button battery, and once placed into a suitable wagon, coach or locomotive, will operate every time the train moves despite having no physical connection with the rolling stock. That is possible because the capsule has a built-in motion sensor which is sensitive enough to detect even the slightest movement and will activate a sound file accordingly.
Because sound capsules do not require wiring, they are an attractive way to add sound to rolling stock with little fuss, but if you're considering using one, make sure you have enough space to house it first.
