How important is the needle size on an airbrush?
For many regular airbrush users, the size of their needles is of the utmost importance.
The range of needle sizes available for airbrushes can be thought of in three distinct categories: Fine, Medium and Large.
The 'Finer' category includes needle sizes 0.1 and 0.2 mm. These needles are typically used for finer work including applying thin lines to models and small-scale pre-shading projects.
The 'Medium' category includes needle sizes 0.3 and 0.35 mm. These needles are a good all-purpose workhorse. They are often used by modellers who undertake a fair amount of both fine and large-scale paint projects. The needle's ability to apply paint in lines as thin as 0.5 mm or coverage as great as 30 mm, makes them ideal for most modelling jobs. They are also a favourite choice for many that are new to airbrushing.
Finally, the 'Large' category includes needle sizes 0.4 and 0.5 mm. These needles are used more for covering larger areas than applying detail. A larger needle also works better when using thicker paints such as some primers or metallics.
Although needle size is important, if you are only just venturing into the world of airbrushes, go for a medium-sized needle first to build up your knowledge and experience.
