What is a wash used for?
A wash is a thinned down coat of paint used by modellers to add details such as weathering, dust, grime, oil, rust or mud to the models and scenery on their layouts or dioramas.
A wash is a coat of paint so thin, that when applied to a model, the paint beneath can be seen showing through making them ideal for ageing and weathering techniques as well as adding grime of all descriptions. Washes can be used to create lighter deposits such as dust or snow, but are more commonly used to depict darker effects such as smoke, oil, rust and mud.
Washes can be purchased readymade or mixed at home by thinning down acrylic paints with water or enamel paint with thinners.
If using a wash for the first time, consider experimenting on an old test model first. A common mistake when new to using washes, is to be a little heavy-handed, and that can be a costly mistake.
