How much paint is required for a model kit?
Once you have chosen a model to keep you occupied for a weekend or two, you will need to buy some paint to finish it off, but how much should you buy?
The answer to this question of course will depend on the size of your model, but for the average kit, the best advice is to study the picture on the box to get an idea of how much of the model is covered with each colour. For colours that make an appearance only as part of the detailing, a small 15ml tin will be more than enough to complete the job, for large expanses of bodywork covered in a single colour, a 30ml bottle may be required.
A further consideration should be that very strong colours may need a couple of coats to competently cover your kit's bare plastic. The number of coats required can be reduced by using a primer of similar brightness to your paint, this also has the added benefit of helping your paint adhere to the model so is advised regardless of kit or paint colours.
Finally, if you do underestimate the amount of paint required for your model, then don't worry, all model paints have a code printed on the tin or bottle so you can always get more!
