What is Steampunk?
Imagine a 21st-century world where the computer chip or electronics had not played a dominant role in the progression of technology, and the steam power and industrialisation of the 1800s had continued to develop to deliver everything from home creature comforts to industrial processes and transport needs - that is Steampunk!
Steampunk is described as a retro-futuristic subgenre of science fiction and is not a modern concept, H. G. Wells and Jules Verne both envisaged alternative worlds where steam can power machines capable of undertaking remarkable tasks.
Interestingly, although Steampunk concentrates on a futuristic world, it is generally not one that appears particularly so and is often portrayed as an anachronistic world, something that is embraced with the fashions and architecture of the Steampunk world.
In modelling, Steampunk is somewhat a niche category, but it is one that provides an infinite amount of interest, detail and potential and is one category of modelling where the word realism has no place.
