What is meant by anchoring a scene?
When modellers use the expression 'anchoring a scene' what they are doing is finding a way to make their scene portray a certain era or location. This is done using a combination of appropriate models, landscape, liveries, architecture or activities undertaken.
The lengths you'll have to go to when hinting that a scene belongs to a particular time or place depends on how precise and focused you want that scene to be. Hinting that a scene belongs to a time when the Big Four ruled the rails and is based somewhere in Devon is relatively easy to do and involves little more than some correctly liveried rolling stock and a few palm trees scattered here and there, however, portraying Torquay in the summer of 1948 will inevitably involve recreating exact buildings and track layout, including appropriately clothed figures and the operation of realistic train formations.
Most modellers choose to model somewhere in between these two extremes by using the characteristics of a real-life location or era to build layouts that are based on but not an exact copy of the prototype.
