What are the benefits of using a hand drill when modelling?
Hand drills are used in modelling for intricate jobs where a power drill would not provide the delicacy, pace and accuracy required when working on a small scale or delicate project.
Quite often modellers will need to drill holes into a model where any slips of the drill could cause devastating scratches to a valuable or cherished item. Hand drills are ideal in these circumstances because of the lack of pace, you can drill as slowly and carefully as deemed necessary to achieve a perfect blemish-free hole in exactly the place it was intended.
Another advantage of a hand drill is the lack of strain placed on the drill bit. Drilling a hole in a model or layout will likely involve the use of an incredibly fragile drill bit and power drills tend to snap these within seconds of turning on. Using a hand drill will greatly reduce the risk of this happening as the operator can feel any resistance during the operation of the device.
Hand drills are not the answer to every modelling circumstance and power tools certainly have a part to play in baseboard construction (notwithstanding the desires of the most purist of carpenters) but for those small intricate jobs on a model you have painstakingly created or adapted, it's probably best to leave the Black and Decker in the box!
