What is a trailing goods yard?
A trailing goods yard was a type of goods yard commonly found at many country and smaller stations during the days of pick-up freights. The feature that makes it 'trailing' is a track layout that meant trains had to pass the yard and then reverse their load into the siding.
This arrangement was not uniform throughout the network but was common where space permitted because it was the most efficient way for passing trains to drop off loaded wagons and pick up any empties (and vice versa). It was also common for goods trains to only serve a yard in one direction of travel negating the need for complicated shunting manoeuvres. This means that when a goods siding is situated on the up side of a station, the freight may have to continue past the station to the end of the branch before being dropped off on the return journey.
