What model should I choose as a gift for someone?
If you are wondering what model you should choose as a gift for someone, it would suggest two things, firstly, you are a really nice person and secondly, you are not absolutely sure what the lucky recipient would like.
Sub-interests within a hobby are often technical and rarely discussed with people other than like-minded enthusiasts. Friends and family are often aware of a modeller's affection for trains, planes or cars etc, but often make the mistake of thinking anything relating to the subject would be useable or desired.
A good example of this would be a typical railway modeller, they are likely to be a fan of a certain era, livery or type of train, and even if that information is known, different models have different specifications such as coupling types, levels of detail and methods of operation requiring specific power supplies. Then there is the biggest compatibility factor of all to consider - the scale of the model, get this wrong and the model can not be used. Sub-interests apply to most areas of modelling, even scenic items fall into categories of type, appearance and materials used which a modeller will have carefully considered and taken a particular path.
Planes, cars, boats and wargames are no different with specific modelling paths likely to have been taken by the modeller and only a model with empathy to that path will truly have a home in a collection.
Don't give up though, you have come this far to try and make someone's day. You may consider simply asking the modeller what they would like, it is highly probable they will have a huge list for you to choose from, alternatively, a lot of model shops sell gift vouchers. For most modellers vouchers are far from an unthoughtful gift, but be warned, the said modeller may feel a temptation to punch the air upon receipt of the voucher, this simply means they're happy!
