What is a bridge identification sign?
Bridge identification signs have been used for many years but didn't become commonplace until around 1999. Their function is to provide a reference number for bridges where a road passes underneath a railway (underbridge). The signs ensure that bridge strikes can be reported quickly and accurately saving valuable time in notifying approaching trains.
Bridge identification signs are typically oval and make reference to both the bridge and route that it's on, but, variations exist in other information displayed such as the use of the word bridge on the sign and the colours used for the sign's border.
