What is best flexible track or set track?
It is not really a question of which track is best when it comes to a comparison between flexible track and set track, it is more a question of which track will best suit what you are trying to achieve.
Flexible track usually comes in lengths of just under a metre and can be shaped into whatever curve, bend, kink or radius you desire. It will come without rail joiners and will likely need cutting to size when it comes to installing it. But the beauty of flexible track is that you can create exactly the railway track plan that you want.
Set track, on the other hand, comes in preformed solid sections. They are very easy to fit together as they have rail-joiners already attached and their shapes are manufactured to an industry standard so smooth, trouble-free running is almost a given. But you are limited to the radii that the curves are manufactured in, and even the largest radius 4 curves don't represent anything close to realism. However, curves can be hidden, and there are many publications out there dedicated to set track track plans that actually look pretty convincing.
So, in the end, it comes down to a trade-off between realism and convenience, but here's food for thought, it's not what you use, it's how you use it.
