When did the InterCity brand first appear?
The name InterCity first appeared as a brand name in 1966 and was used by British Rail to brand their long-distance expresses. The name originally appeared with a hyphen (Inter-City) and could be seen on services operating the East and West Coast Mainlines as well as the Midland Mainline, the Great Western and Eastern Mainlines and on many inter-regional (cross-country) routes.
The branding first appeared on blue and grey liveried Mk 1 and 2 coaches but wasn't applied to locomotives until the introduction of a dedicated InterCity livery in the 1980s featuring a dark grey upper bodyside with a beige lower section and red stripe. The only exception to this was the InterCity 125 (HST) which featured branded locomotives from its launch in 1976 despite originally operating in a version of BR's blue and grey livery.
After sectorisation in 1986, the InterCity brand continued, with the livery and logo being slightly revised shortly afterwards. Around that time, a small number of lesser-powered secondary diesel locomotives also started to sport the livery for the operation of InterCity services over parts of the network requiring lighter motive power.
Interestingly, the name Inter-City was used before 1966 on a named train. The train ran once a day from 1950 until 1967 operating between London Paddington and Wolverhampton but ceased operations after the route was electrified.
