What are my curved platform options in model railways?
A good many real-life platforms have some sort of curve incorporated into them to accommodate either the topography of the land or to make use of diverging tracks at the earliest opportunity. So it stands to reason that many modellers will want to replicate this either for the same real reasons or to copy a prototype, but what are your curved model platform options?
Most modellers, and especially the ones who've been around a while, will be aware of Hornby's OO gauge plastic curved platform sections. They are fairly basic in design but serve their purpose well and have found a fond home on many layouts. Peco also produces a similar product and has taken it one step further by offering a choice of stone or brick base strips, and as a bonus, they are available in N gauge too. Their platforms are even supplied with scribed lines underneath affording modellers a little flexibility of platform width should they care to adapt their models.
If there's a criticism to be made of plastic platform sections, it would be that they tend to have a somewhat uniform appearance as their contour follows a strict parallel course. If a curved platform with more shape flexibility is what you desire, Metcalfe's N and OO gauge card platform kits allow modellers to construct a platform to pretty much any shape they want. That could include the fabrication of bay platforms, curved platforms and platforms that vary in width as they progress, making them a firm favourite with many serious modellers.
