Why are some model trains so much cheaper than others?
Most accomplished modellers will be accustomed to the large price differences sometimes experienced between seemingly similar locomotives or rolling stock, and they'll likely have a fair understanding of which features contribute to such differences. But what about enthusiasts new to the hobby? or families looking for little more than a bit of weekend fun? to them, the price difference must be quite bemusing!
Several factors can affect the price of model locomotives, brand is one, but only to a degree. On a closer inspection, you will find that most differences in price are equal to the amount of detail and technology packed into a model, for example, a highly detailed and weathered Flying Scotsman with DCC and sound fitted, will be at the opposite end of the price spectrum to a bog-standard 'Railroad' type model intended for a starter pack.
In that case scenario, the uninitiated may well see both models as similar and even perceive the extra cost as buying extra quality or durability, but that would be a mistake. If you require a locomotive that is more likely to survive a grandchild's own ideas of a prototypical speed round a bend, or the family cat's desire to join in, a model with less technology or separately fitted detail is highly advised!
On the other hand, we can't always say that a higher price always equals huge amounts of detail or ultra smooth running capabilities. There are many model reviews out there drawing attention to the lack of bang for buck for certain models, but in general, the theory is correct and price should equal more detail and technology.
